Gardeners Morden Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Morden is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to identifying, managing and reducing risks associated with gardening work, including domestic gardens, communal outdoor spaces and commercial grounds.
We recognise that gardening activities involve the use of machinery, tools, vehicles, chemicals and manual handling. We will plan and carry out all work so that hazards are controlled and so far as is reasonably practicable, harm is prevented.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Gardeners Morden rests with the company management, who ensure suitable resources, systems and supervision are in place. Managers are responsible for implementing this policy, monitoring performance and reviewing procedures where needed.
All gardeners, operatives and contractors working on behalf of Gardeners Morden must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. They must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear appropriate protective clothing and report hazards or incidents without delay.
Risk Assessment and Planning
Before starting work at any site, Gardeners Morden will assess the key risks associated with the tasks to be carried out. This will include, where relevant, the use of powered machinery, working near roads or public paths, handling of soil and green waste, use of garden chemicals and work at height such as tree pruning or hedge cutting.
Where specific site risks are identified, such as uneven surfaces, poor access, overhead services, ponds or water features, steps will be taken to control these risks. Control measures may include adjusted work methods, barriers or signage, designated exclusion zones, or changes to timing of activities to minimise contact with the public.
Safe Use of Tools and Machinery
Gardeners Morden will ensure that all tools and machinery used for gardening work are suitable for the task, properly maintained and inspected at appropriate intervals. Defective tools or machinery must not be used and will be removed from service until repaired or replaced.
Only competent and authorised personnel may operate powered equipment such as lawnmowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, blowers and compactors. Equipment will be operated in accordance with manufacturer instructions and established safe systems of work, including refuelling procedures, guarding and emergency stops where fitted.
Personal Protective Equipment
Appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and ear protection, high visibility clothing, helmets and respiratory protection where required.
All personnel are required to wear personal protective equipment as instructed and to keep it in good condition. Damaged or unfit equipment must be reported and replaced. Personal protective equipment is not a substitute for safe systems of work and other control measures, but an additional level of protection.
Manual Handling and Physical Wellbeing
Gardening and grounds maintenance work often involves lifting, carrying, digging and repetitive movements. Gardeners Morden will organise work to minimise the risk of strain and injury, including the use of mechanical aids where possible, team lifting for heavy items and sensible limits on loads.
Staff will be instructed in safe manual handling techniques, the importance of warming up, taking appropriate breaks and using correct posture. Tasks will be rotated where practicable to reduce the risk of overuse injuries. Any pain, discomfort or suspected injury must be reported promptly so that adjustments can be made.
Use of Chemicals and Hazardous Substances
Where garden chemicals or other hazardous substances are used, Gardeners Morden will ensure that they are assessed and controlled in line with relevant safety guidance. Only approved products will be used, and always in strict accordance with the manufacturer instructions, dosage rates and application methods.
Chemicals will be stored securely, clearly labelled and kept out of reach of unauthorised persons. Personal protective equipment suitable to the product being used will be worn, and measures taken to prevent contamination of skin, eyes and watercourses. Empty containers and unused chemicals will be disposed of responsibly.
Work Near the Public and Clients
Many gardening activities take place in or near spaces open to residents, visitors and other members of the public. Gardeners Morden will take reasonable steps to protect others from harm by controlling access to work areas, using warning signs or temporary barriers where necessary and carefully managing vehicle and machinery movements.
Tools and equipment will be never left unattended where they could present a danger. Hoses, cables and other trip hazards will be placed and secured to avoid obstruction wherever possible. We will communicate clearly with clients about any temporary restrictions, such as keeping children and pets away from active work areas.
Environmental Protection and Site Cleanliness
Gardeners Morden is committed to working in a way that respects and protects the local environment. We will minimise noise, dust and disturbance, and take care to avoid damage to property, wildlife habitats and existing planting, except where removal has been agreed as part of the work.
All waste such as cuttings, soil, damaged materials and packaging will be handled and disposed of responsibly. Work areas will be left safe, tidy and secure at the end of each job or working day, with tools, machinery and materials stored safely.
Training, Information and Supervision
We will provide appropriate training and instruction to ensure that all personnel understand the hazards associated with gardening work and the control measures in place. This includes induction training, task specific instruction, refresher training, and where required, formal qualifications for specialised equipment or activities.
Supervision will be proportionate to the risks and the experience of the individuals involved. New or inexperienced staff will receive closer guidance until they have demonstrated safe and competent working practices.
Accident Reporting and Continuous Improvement
All accidents, near misses, incidents and health concerns arising from work activities must be reported to management as soon as reasonably possible. Details will be recorded, investigated and used to identify any improvements required in our systems of work, equipment or training.
Gardeners Morden is committed to reviewing this Health and Safety Policy regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our activities, work methods, equipment or applicable regulations. By working together, we aim to maintain a safe and healthy environment for everyone involved in or affected by our gardening services.
